GRAMMAR 17: USED TO

GRAMMAR 17: USED TO

Hello, boys and girls! How are you this lovely Wednesday. Today we´re going to talk about USED TO. Have you ever used these two words? Do you know their meaning? If not, you must read this post and practise. It´s a piece of cake. Go on!

WHEN DO WE USE ‘USED TO’?

We use ‘used to’ to talk about past habits (things we did regularly in the past but not now). ‘Used to’ does not exist in the present tense and can be used with ACTION VERBS (make, cook…) and NON ACTION VERBS (be, have…).

We often use NOT… ANY MORE /ANY LONGER (= not now) with the present simple to contrast with ‘used to’.

Structure:

SUBJECT+ USED TO + INFINITIVE

SUBJECT + DIDN´T USE TO + INFINITIVE

DID + SUBJECT + USE TO + INFINITIVE?

Examples:

AFFIRMATIVE

I used to play with dolls when I was a child.

I used to smoke (I smoked for a period time in the past but now I don´t).

I used to go to the gym but I don´t any more / any longer.

We used to be close friends but we don´t see each other any more.

NEGATIVE

My mun didn´t use to have so many exams when she was at school.

QUESTION

Did you use to wear glasses?

.

And that is all for today. Do you have any doubts? If so, leave us a comment.

Once more, thank you for visiting our blog!
