SPEAKING 11: HOW ARE YOU?

Hello boys and girls! We know that we´re going through a difficult situation due to the coronavirus, but we must be positive and stay at home, of course! But it doesn´t mean you cannot study English. In this post we´re going to talk about different ways to answer the following question: ‘How are you?’ If you don´t want to sound repetitive, you must read this post. Go on!

HOW ARE YOU?

First of all, you must know that there are different ways to ask this question. Here you can see some examples.

– How is it going?

– What´s up?

– How are you doing?

– How are you going?

-Are you okay? / You okay? / You alright? / Alright?

– How are things going?

– What´s the matter?

– How is everything? / How´s everything?

– How are things?

– What´s new?

– Are you alright? / You alright?

POSSIBLE ANSWERS

Secondly, the most common answer is ‘Fine, thank you, and you?’ It´s time to forget that. There are a lot of different options.

– Great! I´m doing well, thank you.

– Fantastic! Thank you. How are you?

-Wonderful.

– Happy / Perfect.

– Pretty good.

-Hunky Dory (= fine). Old-fashioned and informal.

– I´m good, and you?

– I´m alright.

– Doing well. / Doing good.

– Well… a bit tired / sleepy / ill / hungry / angry.

-I´m OK.

– Not too bad.

– Same old, same old.

– I´m alive.

– I´ve been better / I´ve seen better days.

-Not doing so well / Not doing that great.
