SPEAKING 2: EXPRESSING AGREEMENT AND DISAGREEMENT

Hello everybody! Today´s a beautiful day, isn´t it? What?? Don´t you agree with me? In that case, remember that you have to be polite when you have a different opinion in a conversation, especillay if you´re doing a speaking exam. Here you have some useful expressions (words and phrases) that will help you to express your opinion, ask for an opinion or setting an argument. Read this post and practice talking to your classmates!

Do you need to improve your speaking skills? Don´t worry. It´s a piece of cake. Here you have a long list of expressions that you can use in a conversation to enrich your vocabulary.

 

ASKING FOR AN OPINION

If you want to request some information, you can say…

-What do you think?

-Do you agree? (I agree / I don´t agree.)

-Wouldn´t you say?

-How do you feel about that?

-What´s your idea?

-How about you?

-Don´t you believe?

STATING AN OPINION

How can you express your personal view or belief? You can say….

-The way I see it…

-In my opinion…

-From my point of view…

-If you want my honest opinion…

-According to Jack… /According to the book…

-As far as I am concerned…

-If you ask me…

-To be honest, I´m not really a big fan of…

EXPRESSING AGREEMENT

If you have the same opinion, you can say…

-I suppose so…

-I guess so…

-I agree with you a hundred percent.

-I couldn´t agree with you more.

-That´s so true.

-That´s for sure.

-You´re absolutely right.

-Absolutely.

-That´s exactly how I feel.

-Exactly.

-No doubt about it.

-Me neither.

-I´m afraid I agree with Sarah.

EXPRESSING DISAGREEMENT

If you differ in opinion, remember that you must be polite. You can say…

-I don´t think so.

-No way. (Strong)

-I totally disagree. (Strong)

-I beg to differ.

-I´d say the exact opposite.

-Not necessarily.

-That´s not always true…

-That´s not always the case…

-No, I´m not sure about that…

-I see your point, but…

INTERRUPTIONS

When you (accidentaly) interrup someone, you can say…

-Sorry, go ahead… 

-Sorry, you were saying… 

-Can I add something here?

-If I might add something…

-Sorry to interrup, but…

-You didn´t let me finish…

-It´s ok if I jump in for a second?

-Can I throw my two cents in? (Colloquial)

SETTLING AN ARGUMENT

To finish the discussion or debate you can say… (Try to be polite)

-Great! That´s settled! (Possitive result)

-Let´s move on, shall we? (You don´t agree)

-Let´s drop it. (It´s impossible to make an agreement)

-Whatever you say. (Sarcastic)

-If you say so. (Sarcastic)

-I think we´re going to agree to disagree. (It´s impossible to make an agreement)
