BOOK REVIEW 2: THE GREAT GATSBY

BOOK REVIEW 2: THE GREAT GATSBY

Wednesday again! And we are here with a book review, but this time we are going to talk about an American author. His name? Francis Scott Fitzgerald, the writer who best reflected the period between 1920s and 1930s (the ‘Jazz Age’ in USA) in his novels. He wrote only four books, but a long list of short stories. One of his best-known books is ‘The Great Gatsby’, the one we are going to talk about. You probably know it thanks to the film adaptation, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. If not, go on and read our review, but take care! There are spoilers!

TITLE: The Great Gatsby.

AUTHOR: Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

LITERARY GENRE: Drama.

MAIN CHARACTERS:

  • Nick Carraway: He is the narrator of the story, a young man who moves to West Egg, in front of Gatsby´s house. Mr Carraway is Daisy´s cousin and he becomes Gatsby´s friend.
  • Jay Gatsby: He is the real star of the novel, a handsome rich man whose fortune has a mysteryous origin. In the past he had a romantic relationship with Daisy and now he is obsessed with her.
  • Daisy Buchanan: She is a shallow upper-class girl who is married to a rude millionaire man called Tom.

TIME OF THE STORY:

The main events take place in the summer of 1922 (and they develop during three months), but the final scene take place five years later.

PLACE OF THE STORY:

The story is set on Long Island (fictional West Egg and East Egg) and New York.

PLOT / SUMMARY:

Nick finds a job in New York and moves to West Egg. Near this place, in East Egg, Daisy lives with her family (her husband Tom and her daughter). One day, Nick visits her and meets Jordan, a girl who starts a strange relationship with him. Meanwhile, his neighbour, Gatsby, is always giving parties. Nick meets Gatsby in one of them and they become friends. That is why Nick helps Gatsby to restart his romance with Daisy.

Finally, Daisy runs over her husband´s mistress and the mistress´husband assassinates Gatsby.

CONCLUSIONS:

If you read the novel, you will fall in love with Gatsby because his story is tragic but beautiful. It is the story of a man who loves a girl so much that changes his life to be with her. That is why it is very sad when he dies and nobody goes to his funeral, in spite of his hospitality in life. That shows the superficiality of a society which enjoys parties but forgets real feelings and worries.

THE BEST THING OF THE BOOK:

This novel is incredibly addictive. This is due to the fact that the author makes concise and brief descriptions of the situations, so he gets to the point. In addition, Gatsby´s love for Daisy will touch romantic people´s hearts.

THE WORST THING OF THE BOOK:

The vocabulary is sometimes a bit inaccessible for English learners but that is positive because it enriches your vocabulary. Moreover, the novel is short, so you do not have time to get bored.

Now, what do you think? Would you like to give this short novel a shot? Yes or no?
